Desmin (DES) Antibodies for Muscle Lineage Research

Desmin (DES) is a muscle-specific intermediate filament protein that plays a central role in maintaining the structural organization and mechanical integrity of muscle cells. It is expressed in skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle tissues, where it forms a cytoplasmic filament network linking contractile elements to cellular architecture. Desmin antibodies are widely used to detect DES expression in normal tissues and tumors, where expression patterns provide important insight into muscle differentiation and cellular lineage.

In normal tissues, Desmin is strongly expressed in muscle cells, while epithelial, lymphoid, and most non-muscle tissues show minimal to no expression. In contrast, most carcinomas and non-myogenic tumors show little to no Desmin expression, supporting its use in distinguishing mesenchymal tumors from epithelial malignancies and aiding in tumor classification.

Tissue microarray (TMA) analysis enables large-scale evaluation of Desmin expression across diverse normal and cancer tissues under standardized experimental conditions. In TMA-based studies, strong staining is consistently observed in muscle tissues and tumors with myogenic differentiation, while non-muscle tissues remain largely negative. This contrast supports the specificity of Desmin as a muscle lineage marker and highlights its value in large-scale tissue profiling, biomarker validation, and comparative cancer research.
