HSP60 Antibody AE-1 / Heat Shock 60 kDa Protein Antibody recognizes HSP60, a highly conserved molecular chaperone encoded by the HSPD1 gene. HSP60 is predominantly localized to the mitochondrial matrix, where it participates in the folding and assembly of proteins required for mitochondrial function. Together with its co-chaperonin HSP10, HSP60 forms an ATP-dependent chaperone system that helps maintain mitochondrial protein homeostasis.
HSP60 is initially synthesized as a precursor containing an N-terminal mitochondrial targeting sequence. After import into mitochondria, this sequence is removed to produce the mature protein. HSP60 subunits assemble into oligomeric complexes that provide a protected environment for unfolded and partially folded proteins, allowing them to acquire functional conformations while limiting inappropriate protein interactions.
Expression and function of HSP60 can be influenced by environmental and physiological stress. HSP60 is also of interest in immunology because mammalian HSP60 is evolutionarily related to bacterial chaperonins. Immune responses directed against bacterial HSP60 proteins may recognize conserved features shared with mammalian homologs, and HSP60-associated immune reactivity has been investigated in inflammatory and autoimmune disease.
