CGRP Antibody / Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide 1 Antibody recognizes alpha-calcitonin gene-related peptide, commonly called alpha-CGRP or CGRP1, a 37-amino acid neuropeptide produced from the CALCA gene. Alternative RNA processing of CALCA generates distinct transcripts that give rise to calcitonin or alpha-CGRP depending on the cellular context. While calcitonin is prominently associated with thyroid parafollicular C cells and calcium homeostasis, alpha-CGRP is widely studied as a signaling peptide in sensory neurons and the neurovascular system.
Alpha-CGRP is a potent vasodilatory neuropeptide with important functions in sensory signaling, vascular regulation, and neurogenic inflammation. It is released from subsets of sensory neurons and acts through the CGRP receptor complex, which includes calcitonin receptor-like receptor and receptor activity-modifying protein 1. CGRP signaling can influence vascular smooth muscle tone, neuronal communication, inflammatory responses, and interactions between the nervous and cardiovascular systems.
CGRP biology has received considerable attention in studies of nociception, migraine, neurovascular signaling, and sensory nerve function. Elevated or dysregulated CGRP signaling is particularly relevant to migraine biology, where the CGRP pathway has become an important molecular target. Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide 1 is also investigated in cardiovascular physiology, inflammation, tissue innervation, and communication between peripheral sensory neurons and their target tissues.
