CD11 Alpha Antibody DF1524 / ITGAL Antibody recognizes CD11a, the integrin alpha L protein encoded by ITGAL. CD11a associates with the beta 2 integrin subunit CD18 to form lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1). This receptor helps leukocytes establish contact with other cells during immune surveillance and inflammatory responses. CD11a is the alpha chain of the receptor; LFA-1 refers to the complete CD11a/CD18 heterodimer.
LFA-1 binds intercellular adhesion molecules, including ICAM-1, ICAM-2, and ICAM-3. These interactions contribute to leukocyte attachment, movement into tissues, and contact between immune cells. Receptor activation and organization at the cell surface affect how strongly a leukocyte adheres. Consequently, CD11a expression and LFA-1 adhesive activity are related but distinct measurements. The distinction matters when interpreting experiments designed to examine either receptor abundance or cell behavior.
ITGAL is associated with leukocytes, including lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes. Studying its protein product can help characterize immune cell populations and investigate how they interact with surrounding cells. CD11a also belongs to the broader CD11 family: other CD11 alpha subunits pair with CD18, but they form different beta 2 integrins with their own ligand preferences and biological roles. The ITGAL name identifies integrin alpha L specifically when several family members are under study.
Cell-to-cell adhesion is particularly important when immune cells communicate. LFA-1 can help maintain contact between a T cell and an antigen-presenting cell, supporting the close interaction required for immune signaling. It also contributes to leukocyte recruitment at sites of inflammation. These functions depend on the assembled receptor and its activation state, so detecting its CD11a subunit does not by itself establish the strength of an adhesive response.
Clone DF1524 is described as blocking LFA-1-dependent homotypic cell aggregation.
