CD11a Antibody CRIS-3 / Integrin Alpha L Antibody recognizes the alpha L integrin subunit, also known as CD11a or ITGAL. CD11a pairs with the beta 2 integrin subunit CD18 to form lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1), a cell surface receptor central to leukocyte adhesion. The alpha subunit contributes to ligand recognition, while the paired subunits together support the receptor’s adhesive and signaling functions.
Leukocytes use LFA-1 to establish contact with other cells and move through tissues during immune surveillance. Its ligands include intercellular adhesion molecules ICAM-1, ICAM-2, and ICAM-3. These interactions help immune cells attach to vascular endothelium, cross vessel walls, and form contacts with antigen-presenting cells. Changes in receptor activation and cellular context can alter how strongly a leukocyte adheres, even when CD11a remains present at the surface.
Integrin alpha L is associated with leukocytes, including lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes. Its expression makes CD11a useful when examining immune cell populations, while its partnership with CD18 connects it to the larger family of beta 2 integrins. CD11a should be distinguished from other CD11 alpha subunits, which also pair with CD18 but differ in their ligand preferences and biological roles. The ITGAL gene name identifies the specific alpha subunit when several related integrins are being studied.
At an immune cell interface, LFA-1 contributes to stable contact after initial recognition. This is especially relevant to interactions between T cells and antigen-presenting cells, where adhesion helps sustain the close apposition needed for communication. LFA-1 also participates in leukocyte recruitment during inflammatory responses. Because adhesion depends on receptor organization and activation as well as expression, a measurement of CD11a alone should be interpreted in the context of the biological question.
NSJ Bioreagents offers CD11a Antibody CRIS-3 for research on this leukocyte-associated integrin subunit. The CD11a/CD18 relationship explains why CD11a is frequently called the LFA-1 alpha chain, although the names describe different structures: CD11a is one protein, and LFA-1 is the heterodimer it forms with CD18.
A CD11a Antibody CRIS-3 / Integrin Alpha L Antibody can help researchers examine this subunit in studies of leukocyte identity, adhesion, and immune cell interactions.
