Description

APOE Antibody recognizes Apolipoprotein E (APOE), a secreted glycoprotein that plays a fundamental role in lipid transport, cholesterol homeostasis, and lipoprotein metabolism. APOE functions as a structural component of chylomicrons, very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), and selected high-density lipoproteins (HDL), where it mediates receptor-dependent uptake and redistribution of cholesterol and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. By interacting with members of the low-density lipoprotein receptor family, APOE facilitates lipid transport between the liver, peripheral tissues, and the central nervous system. Consequently, APOE Antibody is widely used to investigate lipid metabolism, cardiovascular biology, neurodegenerative disease, and metabolic disorders.

APOE is produced primarily by hepatocytes, which account for most circulating APOE, although substantial expression is also found in macrophages, astrocytes, microglia, and other cell types. Within the brain, APOE is the principal apolipoprotein responsible for transporting cholesterol to neurons, supporting membrane maintenance, synapse formation, and neuronal repair. Three common human isoforms, APOE2, APOE3, and APOE4, differ in their biological properties and clinical significance. In particular, the APOE4 allele is strongly associated with an increased risk of late-onset Alzheimer's disease, while APOE2 is generally associated with reduced Alzheimer's disease risk but altered lipid metabolism.

In addition to lipid transport, APOE influences numerous biological processes including immune regulation, inflammatory signaling, amyloid beta clearance, vascular integrity, and tissue repair. Dysregulated APOE expression or function has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, stroke, traumatic brain injury, age-related macular degeneration, and chronic inflammatory disorders. Because APOE participates in both systemic metabolism and central nervous system homeostasis, it remains one of the most extensively studied proteins in cardiovascular and neuroscience research.
