Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), encoded by CEACAM5 and also known as CD66e, is a well-established epithelial tumor marker widely used in cancer research. CEA antibodies are commonly used to detect CEACAM5 expression in epithelial-derived tissues and tumors, where expression is frequently elevated and redistributed compared to normal physiological conditions. In normal tissues, CEA is typically localized to the apical surface of epithelial cells in gastrointestinal and glandular tissues, while malignant transformation is associated with increased expression and broader membranous and cytoplasmic distribution.

CEA antibody reagents support detection of epithelial tumor cells, evaluation of tumor-associated antigen expression, and studies of epithelial differentiation. The contrast between epithelial tumor cells and surrounding non-epithelial tissues enhances interpretability in tissue-based assays and supports its use in tumor profiling studies.

In TMA-based studies, strong tumor-associated staining is observed in epithelial malignancies alongside minimal background in non-epithelial tissues, reinforcing the specificity of CEA as a tumor marker.
