B-cell lymphoma 2a (Bcl2a) is a member of the Bcl-2 family of proteins that regulate apoptosis, or programmed cell death. In zebrafish (Danio rerio), Bcl2a functions as an anti-apoptotic protein, playing a key role in promoting cell survival during development and in response to cellular stress.
Bcl2a acts by inhibiting the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, primarily through binding and neutralizing pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bax and Bak. This prevents the release of cytochrome c and the subsequent activation of caspases. Zebrafish bcl2a is expressed in various tissues during embryogenesis, including the developing brain, spinal cord, and hematopoietic tissues, where controlled regulation of cell death is essential for proper morphogenesis and tissue homeostasis.
