CTNG Antibody rCTNG/1664 / Plakoglobin Recombinant Antibody recognizes plakoglobin, an armadillo repeat protein encoded by the JUP gene. Historically referred to as CTNG or gamma catenin, plakoglobin is an important component of both desmosomes and adherens junctions. These specialized cell-cell adhesion structures contribute to tissue organization and mechanical stability by connecting neighboring cells and coordinating their association with cytoskeletal networks. Plakoglobin consequently occupies an important position in the molecular organization of intercellular junctions.
Plakoglobin contains a central series of armadillo repeats that mediate interactions with several junction-associated proteins. Within desmosomes, it binds components of the desmosomal cadherin and plaque complexes that connect intercellular adhesion structures to intermediate filaments. These interactions help distribute mechanical forces across groups of cells and are particularly important in tissues exposed to repeated physical stress. Plakoglobin can also participate in adherens junctions through interactions with classical cadherins and associated proteins.
CTNG terminology reflects the protein's historical classification as gamma catenin and remains useful when searching older literature and antibody records. The current gene symbol JUP emphasizes its identity as junction plakoglobin. Plakoglobin shares the characteristic armadillo repeat architecture of beta catenin and can interact with some related junctional components, but the two proteins have distinct distributions and biological functions. A CTNG Antibody can therefore help investigate plakoglobin-associated biology while distinguishing JUP from other members of the catenin family.
The importance of plakoglobin is especially evident in mechanically stressed epithelial and cardiac tissues. Disruption of JUP-containing junctions can impair cell-cell cohesion, and pathogenic variants in JUP are associated with inherited disorders affecting cardiac and epithelial integrity. Altered plakoglobin abundance, localization, and junctional organization have also been investigated in cancer, where changes in intercellular adhesion can accompany loss of normal epithelial architecture and changes in cellular behavior.
The names CTNG, plakoglobin, gamma catenin, and JUP therefore describe the same junction-associated protein from different historical and nomenclature perspectives. NSJ Bioreagents offers clone rCTNG/1664 as a recombinant monoclonal reagent for research involving plakoglobin expression, cell-cell adhesion, and the molecular organization of desmosomes and adherens junctions.
A CTNG Antibody such as clone rCTNG/1664 provides a defined recombinant monoclonal reagent for investigating JUP expression and junctional biology, while a Plakoglobin Recombinant Antibody provides widely recognized protein terminology for studies of cell adhesion, desmosomes, and adherens junctions.
