Galectin 3 Antibody LGALS3/13233R / LGALS3 Rabbit MAb recognizes galectin-3, a beta-galactoside-binding lectin encoded by the LGALS3 gene. Also known as Mac-2, CBP35, and galactoside-binding protein, galectin-3 participates in cell adhesion, immune regulation, inflammation, and tissue remodeling. Unlike many other galectins, galectin-3 contains an N-terminal domain that supports oligomerization and a C-terminal carbohydrate recognition domain responsible for binding specific glycans. This structural arrangement allows the protein to participate in interactions involving cell-surface glycoproteins and extracellular matrix components.
Galectin-3 is found in the cytoplasm, nucleus, cell surface, and extracellular environment. Its localization influences its biological activities, which include regulation of intracellular signaling, cell survival, and interactions between neighboring cells. Extracellular galectin-3 can form multivalent complexes with glycosylated proteins, contributing to the organization of cell-surface receptors and modulation of cellular responses. These interactions are important in processes involving adhesion, migration, and communication between cells and their surrounding environment.
In the immune system, galectin-3 is expressed by several cell populations, including macrophages and other myeloid cells. It contributes to inflammatory signaling, immune cell recruitment, and the regulation of tissue responses to injury. Galectin-3 has also been implicated in fibrosis, where its activities can influence fibroblast activation, extracellular matrix deposition, and tissue remodeling. These functions have attracted considerable interest in cardiovascular, pulmonary, hepatic, and renal disease research.
Galectin-3 expression has been investigated in numerous malignancies, including thyroid, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers. Depending on cellular context, the protein may influence tumor cell survival, adhesion, migration, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment. Changes in its expression and subcellular distribution have been associated with malignant transformation and disease progression, although these relationships vary among tumor types and experimental settings.
The diverse biological functions of galectin-3 reflect its ability to participate in both intracellular regulatory processes and extracellular glycan-dependent interactions. Understanding these activities can provide insight into inflammation, fibrosis, tumor biology, and tissue organization. NSJ Bioreagents offers this Galectin 3 Antibody for research examining glycan recognition, cellular communication, and the molecular mechanisms underlying tissue remodeling.
