KRT18 Antibody KRT18/2819R / Keratin 18 Rabbit Monoclonal Antibody recognizes keratin 18, a type I intermediate filament protein encoded by the KRT18 gene. Keratin 18 is expressed predominantly in simple epithelial cells, where it forms heteropolymeric intermediate filaments with the type II keratin KRT8. These filament networks contribute to mechanical stability, intracellular organization, and the maintenance of epithelial architecture. KRT18 is widely distributed in glandular and simple epithelia, including the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, respiratory system, and reproductive organs.
Intermediate filaments are dynamic structures that undergo reorganization in response to cellular differentiation and stress. KRT18 interacts with other cytoskeletal components and participates in maintaining epithelial polarity and structural integrity. Its association with KRT8 is particularly important because type I and type II keratins assemble together to form stable filament networks. Disruption of these interactions can alter epithelial resilience and influence cellular responses to mechanical or biochemical stress.
In epithelial tumors, KRT18 expression often reflects the differentiation characteristics of the tissue of origin. Many adenocarcinomas retain keratin 18 expression, including tumors arising in the breast, colon, lung, pancreas, and prostate. Changes in intermediate filament organization may accompany tumor progression, altered cell adhesion, and cytoskeletal remodeling. However, KRT18 is not specific to individual carcinoma types, and its detection should be interpreted alongside additional epithelial markers and tissue morphology.
Keratin 18 is also involved in cellular responses to apoptosis. Caspase-mediated cleavage of KRT18 produces fragments that have been investigated as biomarkers of epithelial cell death. These cleavage products are particularly relevant to studies of liver injury and cancer treatment responses. Antibodies recognizing total KRT18 should be distinguished from those specifically directed against caspase-generated neoepitopes, since detection of the intact protein does not independently establish apoptotic cleavage.
NSJ Bioreagents provides KRT18 Antibody KRT18/2819R for research examining epithelial intermediate filament expression and organization. This recombinant rabbit monoclonal antibody offers an alternative host species for investigating KRT18 in epithelial tissues and carcinoma models. The Keratin 18 Rabbit Monoclonal Antibody supports studies of cytoskeletal remodeling, epithelial differentiation, and the cellular responses associated with tissue injury and malignancy.
