NM23 Antibody / Metastasis Suppressor Protein Antibody detects NME1, a multifunctional protein historically known as NM23-H1 and encoded by the NME1 gene. NME1 functions as nucleoside diphosphate kinase A, an enzyme involved in maintaining cellular nucleotide pools through phosphate transfer between nucleoside di- and triphosphates. NM23-H1 has also been extensively investigated in cancer biology because of its association with suppression of metastatic behavior, making NME1 relevant to studies of both cellular metabolism and tumor progression.
NM23 was originally identified through comparisons of murine melanoma cell lines exhibiting different metastatic capacities. Lower NM23 expression was observed in highly metastatic cells, leading to the identification of NME1 as an early metastasis suppressor gene. Subsequent research has examined its involvement in cell migration, invasion, adhesion and other processes contributing to metastatic progression. NME1 belongs to the NME/NM23 family of nucleoside diphosphate kinases. Human NME1 and the closely related NME2 correspond to the historically designated NM23-H1 and NM23-H2 proteins, respectively. NME1 encodes nucleoside diphosphate kinase A, whereas NME2 encodes the B isoform. These proteins participate in nucleotide homeostasis and can form oligomeric complexes, linking their enzymatic functions with broader cellular processes involving proliferation, differentiation and signaling.
Research on NM23-H1 extends beyond its original identification as a metastasis suppressor. NME1 has been investigated in cellular differentiation, development, DNA-associated processes and regulatory networks affecting cell behavior.
