Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 Antibody recognizes NCAM1, also known as CD56, a cell-surface glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 mediates cell-cell interactions and participates in adhesion, migration, differentiation, and intracellular signaling. NCAM1 is particularly abundant in neural tissues, where it contributes to nervous system development, neurite extension, axonal guidance, synaptic organization, and neural plasticity. Multiple NCAM1 isoforms are produced through alternative splicing, including membrane-associated and soluble forms with distinct structural and functional properties.
NCAM1 undergoes extensive post-translational modification that influences its molecular characteristics and biological activity. Polysialylation is particularly important because addition of polysialic acid can reduce NCAM1-mediated adhesion and facilitate dynamic cellular interactions during development, migration, and tissue remodeling. NCAM1 also interacts with cell-surface receptors, extracellular matrix components, and intracellular signaling proteins, allowing it to influence cytoskeletal organization, cellular motility, survival, and differentiation. A Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 Antibody can support research into NCAM1 expression, localization, and its roles in neural development and cell adhesion.
Outside the nervous system, NCAM1 is widely recognized as the CD56 antigen and is prominently expressed by natural killer cells as well as subsets of T lymphocytes. CD56 is consequently an important marker in immunology and immune cell characterization. NCAM1 expression is also associated with several malignancies, particularly tumors exhibiting neural, neuroendocrine, or hematologic differentiation. Altered expression may influence tumor cell adhesion, migration, signaling, and interactions with surrounding cells. Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 Antibody reagents are therefore relevant to research spanning neuroscience, immunology, developmental biology, and cancer biology.
The diverse functions of NCAM1 connect cell adhesion with signaling mechanisms involved in tissue development, neural function, immunity, and disease. Its expression as CD56 further provides an important link between neural cell adhesion biology and immune cell phenotyping. NSJ Bioreagents offers antibodies for studying CD markers and related cellular proteins. A Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 Antibody is useful for studying NCAM1 expression, CD56 biology, neuronal development, cell-cell adhesion, immune cell populations, and NCAM1-associated cancers.
