Follistatin Antibody / Activin Antagonist Antibody recognizes follistatin (FST), a secreted glycoprotein that functions as a potent extracellular antagonist of activins and several members of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily. By binding these ligands with high affinity, follistatin regulates signaling pathways that control embryonic development, tissue differentiation, cell proliferation, reproduction, muscle growth, and tissue repair. Among the best-characterized isoforms are FS288 and FS315, which differ in tissue distribution and biological activity while contributing to the diverse physiological functions of follistatin. Follistatin Antibody / Activin Antagonist Antibody is widely used to investigate transforming growth factor beta signaling, developmental biology, regenerative medicine, and endocrine regulation.
Follistatin is expressed in numerous tissues and modulates signaling by activins, myostatin, selected bone morphogenetic proteins, and additional transforming growth factor beta family ligands. Through these interactions, follistatin regulates mesoderm formation, organogenesis, skeletal muscle development, ovarian folliculogenesis, wound healing, and stem cell differentiation. The FS288 isoform binds strongly to cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans, whereas FS315 is more readily released into extracellular fluids, providing complementary mechanisms for localized and systemic regulation of growth factor signaling. This antibody recognizes both the FS288 and FS315 isoforms, enabling comprehensive analysis of endogenous follistatin expression.
Altered follistatin expression has been associated with muscle wasting disorders, fibrosis, reproductive disease, metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, and multiple forms of cancer. Because follistatin serves as a natural inhibitor of activin and myostatin signaling, it has become an important therapeutic target in regenerative medicine and neuromuscular research. Continued investigation of follistatin biology has expanded understanding of tissue regeneration, extracellular signaling, and developmental regulation across numerous physiological and pathological conditions.
NSJ Bioreagents' Follistatin Antibody / Activin Antagonist Antibody (clone FST/4281) is a mouse monoclonal antibody validated for immunohistochemistry and recognizes both the FS288 and FS315 isoforms of follistatin. This antibody provides reliable detection of endogenous follistatin while supporting investigations into activin signaling, muscle biology, embryonic development, reproductive physiology, tissue regeneration, and transforming growth factor beta pathway regulation.
